LONDON TAXIS
London is famous & unique in many ways, & for many things. One thing that visitors always remember, are London’s famous "Black Cabs". Although today many are not Black, they come in various colours, some are even mobile advertising hoarding; but they and their drivers are still licensed by the Public Carriage Office, or P.C.O.
"Taxi" is the 2nd most common word in the world. New
Your, Paris, Rome, etc., all have Taxi’s. But the London Black Cab is unique
in that it is a propose built vehicle, made to transport people in
comfort,
safety & style around London & the City’s busy & sometimes narrow
streets.
They are also the only vehicle allowed by law, to ply for hire on the streets of our City. Since the start of the year 2000, ALL of London’s Black Cabs have, by law, been wheelchair accessible. That means they can pick-up anyone, anytime, anywhere.
Since 1694, London Taxis have been continuously licensed, and are the oldest licensed public land bases transport system in the world.
The P.C.O. regulate our trade, and maintain the high standards that London Cabs are renown the world over for. Maintenance of the vehicle, driver standards, & capability are all maintained by the P.C.O. They also insist that all licensed Cabs display clearly both outside ( on the rear ) & inside, their numbered licence plate. They insist that a tariff, authorised by them, is clearly displayed. That all fare meters be illuminated, & that all licensed Taxis be wheelchair accessible.
A yellow illuminated sign on the front of the roof of the cab will tell you that that cab is for hire. Though lit, it is at the drivers discretion to stop or not. However, if they chose to stop and ask where you wish too go, they are then obliged by law to take you on any journey not exceeding 6 miles / or 1 hour in duration.
